Commercial & Residential Cleaning Services forecasts to 2011 & 2016
Commercial & Residential Cleaning Services forecasts to 2011 & 2016
US revenues to grow 5.3% annually through 2011
Revenues for commercial and residential cleaning services are forecast to advance 5.3 percent per annum through 2011 to $62.8 billion. Gains will be driven by the shift away from do-it-yourself cleaning services, particularly in the residential market. In many instances, dual-income families do not have the time to achieve a professionally maintained look for their homes so they contract with the appropriate service provider to perform these tasks. Furthermore, the average age of the US population is expected to continue to increase, with many older homeowners physically unable to maintain their homes as they once did. Ongoing health and safety concerns in both the nonresidential and residential segments will also support cleaning services use as employers, building owners and homeowners seek to provide safe and comfortable environments for their occupants.
Interior building cleaning services to remain dominant
In 2006, interior building cleaning services, also referred to as janitorial and maid services, accounted for the largest share of revenues, with nearly three-quarters of the total. This dominance results from the availability of services at a variety of frequency and price levels — from daily to weekly cleanings to specialized service such as party clean-up. As such, many different types of customers contract for interior building services at some level.
Through 2011, however, most other segments are expected to achieve improved growth since the interior building cleaning industry is rather mature. Street and parking lot cleaning and maintenance, restoration and remediation services, swimming pool cleaning and maintenance, and pet waste removal will see the fastest gains in the commercial and residential cleaning service industry through 2011. Floor, fabric and surface cleaning services will see growth slightly off the pace, due to the maturity of carpet and upholstery cleaning in the residential market. Nevertheless, hard surface floor and surface cleaning services will post solid gains, providing growth opportunities in this service segment.
The institutional and office markets are the largest nonresidential consumers of cleaning services. Through 2011, these segments will see average gains, supported by strong construction spending, establishment growth and an increase in floor space. The residential market is also a key user of cleaning services. The segment will benefit from rising numbers of dual-income households who can afford and/or require (due to time constraints) residential cleaning services. The aging US population will also bolster use of professional residential cleaning services. Among the other markets, transportation equipment cleaning will provide solid growth opportunities, as owners of these fleets turn to outsourcing to cut costs.
