Hard Surface Flooring in China forecasts to 2010 & 2015

Hard Surface Flooring in China forecasts to 2010 & 2015

Flooring demand in China to rise 7.3% yearly through 2010

Demand for hard surface flooring in China is expected to grow 7.3 percent per year through 2010 to 3 billion square meters. Measured in yuan, flooring demand will expand over ten percent per year, reaching 174 billion in 2010. The Chinese flooring market will outpace growth in most other parts of the world, driven by healthy gains in building construction activity as industrialization efforts continue and income levels rise. Government efforts to further increase average per capita living space and privatize home ownership and sustained strength in foreign direct investment funding.

Laminate flooring to grow 16% annually

Nonresilient flooring accounts for over ninety percent of overall Chinese hard surface floor covering demand measured in square meters. Laminate flooring sales will expand nearly 16 percent annually in square meters through 2010. Demand will be stimulated by laminate’s outstanding performance characteristics such as resistance to scratching and nicking, ease of maintenance and repair, and the ability to mimic more costly stone and solid wood flooring. Ceramic floor tile will remain the dominant nonresilient flooring type, accounting for over two thirds of the overall hard surface flooring market.

Residential market to lead advance as homes are privatized

Residential building flooring demand will rise at an above-average rate through 2010. Suppliers will benefit from greater construction activity, fueled by rising employment and personal income levels, further urbanization of the population and government efforts to boost average per capita living space. Nonresidential building floor covering sales will rise at a slower yet still healthy pace, benefitting from sustained strength in foreign investment spending, as well as from increased government expenditures for schools, hospitals and other institutional facilities.

New construction dwarfs aftermarket

Unlike the US, where replacement sales represent more than two-thirds of all residential floor covering demand, new construction applications account for the majority of sales in China. This is due to a number of differences between the two markets. For example, long-lasting nonresilient flooring products account for a much larger share of total demand in China, resulting in significantly lower annual replacement requirements. In addition, living standards are lower in China, so that end users are much less likely to tear out and replace still functional flooring for style considerations. Nevertheless, improvement and repair-related demand will account for a growing share of the market total in China as the size of the installed flooring base expands.

Opportunities vary by region

The size, growth and composition of flooring demand in the six regions that make up China vary considerably. The Northwest is largely underdeveloped, but is being targeted by the central government’s “Go West” strategy that will result in significant growth in floor covering demand as economic output rises and average income levels climb. The market for flooring in the Central- North and Northeast will also benefit from government-funded construction activity. However, the Central-East and Central-South will remain home to well over half of China’s total population and will account for a similarly large share of overall flooring demand in 2010.
